Visa gives contactless payment rings to athletes at Rio Olympics

A select group of Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in Rio will be able to make payments at the touch of a finger thanks to NFC-enabled rings from Visa.

The prototype NFC payment rings will be given to 45 Visa-sponsored athletes to use across the city. The rings are water resistant to a depth of 50 metres and include a secure microchip with an embedded NFC-enabled antenna.

EMVco release best practice advice for contactless payments at Point of Sale

EMVco have released best practice advice regarding contactless payments at Point of Sale which reinforces advice from Mastercard to ensure contactless enabled payment terminals are not installed close to or on top of metal surfaces:

“Contactless acceptance devices should be installed in a way that prevents performance degradation, to avoid instances such as placing the acceptance device into a metal box.” Other advice includes ensuring contactless enabled card readers are not close to Wi-Fi routers or mobile phones or near to ungrounded devices which can include cash registers.
