EMVco have released best practice advice regarding contactless payments at Point of Sale which reinforces advice from Mastercard to ensure contactless enabled payment terminals are not installed close to or on top of metal surfaces:
“Contactless acceptance devices should be installed in a way that prevents performance degradation, to avoid instances such as placing the acceptance device into a metal box.” Other advice includes ensuring contactless enabled card readers are not close to Wi-Fi routers or mobile phones or near to ungrounded devices which can include cash registers.
Metal counters are specifically mentioned as part of this list, underlining the need to ensure contactless payment machines are not placed directly onto metallic surfaces:
“Contactless Acceptance Devices at Merchant location should be installed in a place free of external interference. For example, the following locations should be avoided... on a metallic counter.”
