Multi award winning footwear retailer, Schuh, have been moving from strength to strength since company inception in 1981.
In thirty three years, Schuh have expanded from one Edinburgh store to around 100 stores UK wide, proving themselves a market leader in footwear retail. And with initiatives like the Schuh Welly Exchange now entering its 5th year, they're a retailer with a conscience, as well as a healthy bottom line.
In 2012, Schuh made a decision to use display kiosk units on the shop floor, a new and exciting departure for the company. A few months into development, the decision was made to add a PIN pad to the kiosks, to allow payment card transactions to be processed via the kiosk. Schuh felt this would generate sales and have the added benefit of reducing queues at the cash desk at busy times.
Caroline Robertson, Schuh's Store System Manager, realised that the payment machine would need to be fixed in place for security and to prevent the machine being stolen or damaged. After some initial research into how to mount a PIN Entry Device (PED) she contacted Tailwind to see if they could help develop a bespoke solution for the display kiosks.
"Other suppliers didn't have what we needed and we knew we needed a custom solution." Caroline comments "Looking at Tailwind's FlexiPole Compact, we could see that with a few changes, the product would be just what we needed to secure our PIN pads to the wall next to the kiosk. Dealing with Tailwind from initial enquiry to delivery was excellent. Garry understood what we needed and was able to adapt the Compact from the FlexiPole range to meet our requirements."
Once Caroline had explained what she needed, the process moved smoothly for Schuh with changes being made to the stand as required and installation going ahead on time. Now the stands are installed, how have Schuh found performance? Caroline explains:
"We have found the customised FlexiPole Compact just works for us. The kiosks were a new departure for Schuh and, I believe, if we hadn't fixed the PEDs to the wall we would have experienced problems. The devices would have fallen off a shelf, been damaged, and incurred a cost to Schuh."
The kiosk installation is innovative and combined with the ability to pay at the kiosk, is a real step forward for retail and at the cutting edge of what's available in UK shops today. How have customers found the experience?
"Customer response has been fantastic." Caroline says, "Schuh has carried out something new and different to any other retailer. We can take customers to the kiosks around our store to process a payment card transaction, instead of waiting in a queue at the cash desk."
Overall what is Caroline's impression of the Tailwind team?
"Excellent, especially on service, communication and timescales."
