About Dundee Ice Arena
The Dundee Ice Arena is a multi-purpose ice rink arena located in the Camperdown district of Dundee.
Built in the year 2000, the arena has a capacity of 2,300 seats making it the third largest ice rink arena in Scotland. The venue is open to the public for skating sessions, figure skating lessons and also hosts events such as Dundee Stars home hockey games, figure skating and curling competitions.
In 2014, Neil Craik, Assistant General Manager at the venue, was looking for a way to secure his new Verifone VX 820 payment terminals during an upgrade of the Ice Arena’s reception area. The terminals would be used within a ticketing environment, with a glass screen between the staff member and the customer. To add to the vulnerability of the terminals, the reception area is sometimes left unattended for short periods of time.
Therefore the mounting solution chosen had to ensure that the terminals were secure and could not be tampered with or stolen when staff were not in attendance. The terminals also needed to be accessible to customers and easy to use without assistance from staff, who would be behind the screen during interactions.
Choosing the right product
Neil approached Tailwind to discuss his requirements and after some consideration, the FlexiPole FirstBase Complete and the PEDPack for the Verifone VX 820 were selected as the ideal product choice for the Ice Arena.
The PEDPack, a bespoke back plate designed to fit securely to the back of the Verifone VX 820, is unique to Tailwind and effectively prevents access to the back of the machine, shielding SIMS and SAMS from criminal interference. The PEDPack latches securely into the FlexiPole stand. Accessing the back of the device or removing the device from the stand is almost impossible once the device is mounted onto the stand and the stand itself is also secured to the counter top with a high bond adhesive pad, meaning the terminal is highly secure and can be left unattended without any possibility of tampering, theft or substitution. And as the terminal is securely mounted, cable damage, a common cause of PIN Entry Device failure, is prevented extending the lifetime of the technology.
Speaking about how the stands have performed since installation, Neil commented “The Tailwind stands are an excellent product. The machines are much more secure but the stand still allows the customer to adjust the machine to suit them. So far we haven’t seen a direct benefit in the lifespan of the technology as the machines are new but we anticipate they will last longer due to being mounted. Staff have given positive feedback and I’d have no hesitation recommending Tailwind products to other businesses”
What is Neil’s overall impression of the Tailwind team?
“Professional, approachable and friendly”
And his top three favourite features of the FlexiPole stands?
“Security, aesthetics and functionality. An excellent product with excellent service from the team.”
