The Future of Payments: 2017 and beyond...

How we pay for goods and services is constantly changing, with futuristic-sounding technologies increasingly becoming the norm. But which payment systems are the true game changers?

As we start the new year, it seemed the perfect time to round up the latest views and predictions on a range of payment technologies.

Retailers Launch Payment Apps

Two of the biggest names in US retail have launched their own payment apps, which will enable customers to pay for purchases using their Smart phones.

Mega-retailer Walmart has now completed the US-wide rollout of its Walmart Pay system. Customers can input their credit card or gift card information into the system and then pay for items in-store with their phone. Payment details are stored on Walmart’s servers rather than the phone itself so credit card details are not at risk if the phone is stolen.

How close are we to a cashless society?

Just as credit and debit cards are gradually killing the cheque, it’s now predicted that we’re heading towards a cashless future. But will we ever really give up cash all together?

Over 340 billion non-cash payments, with an estimated total value of $883 trillion, were undertaken globally in 2014, according to the Bank of International Settlements.
